Position Summary

Portland Community College is seeking a full-time instructor for the Nursing and Nursing Assistant programs.

The Portland Community College’s Nursing program is a member of the Oregon Consortium for Nursing Education (OCNE). 

Faculty prepare students to enter the nursing and/or nursing assistant profession, enabling them to respond to changing healthcare needs of individuals and communities in various healthcare settings. Full-time instructor positions require experience in and the ability to teach a broad range of nursing and nursing assistant courses, as well as the ability to develop future coursework in alignment with industry, accreditation and state regulation. Instructors perform all duties of full-time faculty at PCC and in particular:

● Provide academic leadership in the implementation of a robust nursing education program; including skills lab, theory courses, SIM lab and clinicals
● Support and engage with PCC nursing faculty as well as other nursing faculty across the district
● Support the development of an innovative, trauma-informed, culturally-responsive nursing curriculum that meets the needs of a diverse student body

Location:
This position serves PCC’s Nursing Assistant and Nursing programs that currently span across multiple PCC locations. The primary location will be Sylvania Campus, with an expectation that faculty members teach at any location where PCC Nursing or Nursing Assistant courses are taught (including clinical sites across the Portland Metro and/or Vancouver area). In addition, there will be some occasions where business will be required at other off-site locations. There will be some remote/hybrid work opportunities, as approved by the position supervisor and executive leaders.

  • Demonstrated ability to train and/or mentor nursing assistant and nursing students through clinical rotations and/or recent graduates through rotations. 

  • Experience in healthcare education in a variety of modalities or educational delivery methods, experience teaching at a community college in a credit or non-credit nursing assistant and/or in an undergraduate nursing program.

  • Proven collaboration with internal teams and external partners to develop creative, practical solutions that support continuous improvement and help achieve organizational goals.

  • Ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, technology, as well as staff and/or student mentoring.

  • Demonstrated ability to utilize culturally responsive and equity-focused practices with a diverse population and work environment.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Master’s degree in Nursing and maintain expertise in one’s areas of responsibility, have at least three years of nursing experience, and hold a current unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Oregon at the time of hire and be able to acquire a Washington RN license within 6 weeks of hire.

OR

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing and maintain expertise in one’s areas of responsibility, have at least five years of nursing experience, and hold a current unencumbered license to practice as a registered nurse in Oregon at the time of hire and be able to acquire a Washington RN license within 6 weeks of hire.

  • Current certification in CPR/Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers, or the ability to obtain it prior to the start of the term.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Have a minimum of one (1) year RN experience in the provision of long-term care facilities in the US.

  • Experience teaching at a community college in a credit or non-credit nursing assistant and/or in an undergraduate nursing program.

  • Experience with OCNE nursing education curriculum. 

  • A familiarity of Oregon Administrative Rules (OARs) for both nursing assistant and nursing education/training programs.

  • MSN, MNE, clinical nurse educator, practice specialist or similar with evidence of experience in fundamentals of adult learning principles and instructional design methodologies.

  • Two years of acute/inpatient nursing experience within the last 5 years.

  • Demonstrated experience with strategic planning, needs assessment, and program development and evaluation to ensure student needs are being met.

Position Grade 0
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be from Step 1 ($73,911.00) to Step 3 ($78,408.00) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.  Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP.  A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049.  PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
21 hours of additional personal leave per year
4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)
