Position Summary

This Portland Community College position is located in the minimum-security section of Coffee Creek Correctional Facility, in Wilsonville, Oregon. 
This facility is restricted access; no cellphones; pagers; or other personal electronic equipment are allowed. 
Coffee Creek Correctional Facility is a multi-custody prison accommodating all of Oregon's female inmates.

 

The Eyeglass Program Coordinator is responsible for three main duties:

  • Direct AIC workers in the sorting, sanitizing, repair and calibration of recycled eyewear in partnership with the Oregon Lions Sight and Hearing Foundation.
  • Train students in opticianry and paraoptometric curriculum in preparation for the Certified Paraoptometric (CPO) exam, the Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA) exam  and the ABO-NCLE exam from the American Board of Opticianry & National Contact Lens Examiners organization.
  • Manage and coordinate the Coffee Creek optical lab. Train students and supervise the eyeglass finishing lab, which fills prescriptions and provides eyeglasses for statewide DOC facilities.

  •     Considerable knowledge of optical industry and current labor market trends.
  •     Knowledge of college procedures and requirements.
  •     Knowledge of effective training techniques and learning theory.
  •     Knowledge of local, state and federal rules and regulations impacting the corrections field.
  •     Skill in the development and delivery of industry related training, workplace communication, student assessment and evaluation, curriculum development and job skills training.
  •     Skill in project management including communication, organization, facilitation and independent decision making.
  •     Skill in designing and writing classroom instructional materials.
  •     Skill in delivering public presentations and effective group facilitation.
  •     Ability to work with an ethnically and culturally diverse staff and student population.
  •     Ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects and work in an environment with regular interruption.
  •     Ability to communicate technical information in a clear and understandable manner.
  •     Ability to operate a variety of office equipment.
  •     Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form.
  •     Ability to work in a correctional facility and have daily contact with inmates who have the potential for becoming hostile.  

Educational Requirements:

*     One or more of the following:

  •     American Board of Opticianry Certified (ABOC)
  •     Certified Paraoptometric (CPO)
  •     Certified Paraoptometric Assistant (CPOA)
  •     Certified Paraoptometric Technician (CPOT)
  •     Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA)
  •     Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT)
  •     Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist (COMT)

OR

*     A Bachelor's degree in Education, Communication, Psychology, Social Science, or occupational related field (Four years of full-time equivalent experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the educational requirement).

 

Experience Requirement:

  •     Demonstrated experience in an educational or training environment. (minimum of 1 year full-time equivalent)
  •     Demonstrated experience working with at-risk and/or culturally diverse population. (minimum of 1 year full-time equivalent)
  •     Demonstrated experience in the development and delivery of industry and/or workforce training. (minimum of 1 year full-time equivalent)
  •     Must have working knowledge of workforce development issues.
  •     Other equivalent combinations of experience and training will also be considered.

  • Experience working in the optical industry, including finishing lab experience.
  • Corrections experience or other experience that demonstrates the ability to maintain healthy boundaries and uphold security practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to be successfully self-directed and with a team.
  • Training or teaching experience; or classroom management or group leadership experience.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Communication, Psychology, Social Science, or occupational related field. Experience performing the duties of this job may substitute for the degree requirement on a year-for-year basis.

OR

  • Professional/Trade certificate(s) and/or license(s) for designated occupational cluster.
  • Three years of experience in an educational or training environment developing and delivering industry and/or workforce training is required.
  • Demonstrated experience working with at-risk and/or culturally diverse populations.
 
Position Grade 3
Starting Salary Expectations $62,753 to $64,950 (Step 3); based on qualifications, experience, and internal equity.
Position Grade Salary Range $62,753.00 to $108,812.00 Annual Salary

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Work is typically performed in an office/classroom environment both in a corrections facility and in off-site training areas. Incumbents regularly drive between campuses and remote sites, requiring the ability to drive and use of a personal vehicle. Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.

Moderate physical exertion. Frequent standing or walking. Occasional lifting of equipment used in training that may weigh up to 30 lbs. required.
