Position Summary


Portland Community College’s Pre -Trades Program is a leader in educating the next generation of Pre-trades students. We are currently seeking a full-time faculty member who can teach a breadth of program courses in the Fall, Winter, and Spring terms. 

PCC’s Pre Trades Program offers a less than 1-year certificate that provides on-campus courses to prepare students for a rewarding career in the construction trades.  Students in this program prepare to apply to a registered apprenticeship with one of our partner programs like International Brotherhood of Electrician Workers (IBEW) and others.  The program is located at our Swan Island Training Center in N. Portland.   We encourage all candidates to apply who are passionate about teaching and supporting students from all walks of life.

The anticipated timeline for this hiring is: first and second round of interviews in May, with the hiring process completed in June, and the new hire starting at the end of August.

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.

  • Demonstrates an awareness of the need to teach industry-specific content in ways that value and include differences in individual experiences, cultural, ethnic, gender, linguistic diversity and socioeconomic status.
  • Demonstrated experience as a trainer, teacher or mentor in technical principles to individuals from diverse backgrounds with variable skill levels.
  • Clear and demonstrable understanding of inequity in the construction industry and ideas for reaching those that have traditionally lacked access to trades training and the unique challenges they face in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative environment and fostering internal and external relationships.  
  • Knowledge of and commitment to a culture of safety.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Have a journey card or a licensed trade or have completed a registered apprenticeship program.
  • Experience working in a construction setting.
  • Five (5) years of experience working in an "apprenticeable" trade. 

 

Position Grade 0
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 (78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.  Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

PCC offers a comprehensive benefit package designed to provide employees and their families, including domestic partners, with access to a broad range of benefit options. Includes Health, Dental, and Vision options, Group Life, Long-term Disability, Long-term Care, and Auto and Home Insurance programs.

PCC currently funds the Oregon Public Employees Retirement System (PERS/OPSRP) pension and contributes an additional 6% into the employee's Individual Account Program under PERS/OPSRP.  A portion of the 6% will be diverted to The Employee Pension Stability Account as mandated by Senate Bill 1049.  PCC offers a tax deferred annuity program and a deferred compensation program where employees may save additional pre-tax dollars for retirement.

Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for courses offered at PCC for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age; plus partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions.

* Please note: Temporary Full-Time Faculty are not eligible for Personal Leave Days, Life Insurance, Long-term Disability, or AD&D Insurance.

Paid Leave:
1 day of sick leave for every 18 days worked (~10 per year)
21 hours of additional personal leave per year
4 paid holidays (which occur during the term you are teaching)

Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard. (for more information see
