Campus This position serves Fire Protection (FP) programs that currently span multiple locations.  The primary location will be at the Cascade campus, with an expectation that Faculty spend time at each location where FP courses operate.  In addition, there will be some occasions where business will be required at other PCC or off-site locations.  There will be some opportunities for remote/hybrid work, as approved by the position supervisor and executive leaders.

Position Summary

Portland Community College’s Fire Protection Technology program is seeking a full-time instructor effective September 1, 2025 beginning the 2025/2026 academic year.


Portland Community College’s Fire Protection Technology program offers a unique opportunity to launch a career of public service in a short amount of time. PCC provides a diverse yet relevant variety of courses.  We correlate classroom, Drill ground, and field experience in public and private sector fire organizations.  Students are trained to National Fire Protection Association standards (https://www.pcc.edu/programs/fire-protection/).

 

This faculty position based out of PCC’s Cascade campus requires experience in the Fire Protection industry and the ability to teach a broad range of Fire Protection courses as well as develop future coursework in alignment with industry.  The position also requires the ability to facilitate development of technical skills and growth of interpersonal skills among a diverse student population through culturally-responsive instruction.


This position performs all duties of full-time faculty at PCC and in particular:

  • Provides academic leadership in the implementation of a robust fire protection education program;

  • Supports and mentors FP part-time faculty;

  • Supports the development of an innovative, culturally-responsive fire protection curriculum that meets the needs of a diverse student body and industry

Candidate Profile

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.

  1. Ability to ensure program adherence to NFPA professional qualifications and standards

  2. Experience collaboratively managing multiple projects, budgets, facilities, major equipment, contracts, technology, training and/or personnel development, and competing priorities Experience working with multiple industry partners and both internal and external stakeholders to seek continuous program improvement and support student success

  3. Experience teaching Fire Protection educational programs in a variety of modalities or educational delivery methods, and with an interdisciplinary approach with both Fire & EMS, while working to embed Culturally Responsive Education in curriculum and practices

  4. Demonstrated instructional and communication skills with a wide range of students with varied experiences, perspectives, and goals, especially from communities who have been historically underrepresented to create and nurture a sense of community, well-being, and belonging. 

  5. Experience as a structural firefighter, first line supervisor (company officer experience), and an emergency medical responder

 

Note: Prior work with diverse audiences and teaching at the community college, college and/or adult education level is preferred

 

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications.  (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

  • Associate’s Degree in Fire Protection Technology or related field from an accredited institution
  • Minimum 2 years full-time or 4 years part-time recent teaching experience (Note: teaching experience can include leading training and teaching skill-based techniques)
  • 5 years recent experience as a career firefighter, or 10 years recent experience as a volunteer firefighter, or an equivalent combination
Starting Salary Expectations Initial Salary Placement will be between Step 1 ($73,911) and Step 3 ($78,408) based on related experience, per PCC's collective bargaining agreement.  Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements Instructors shall have earned required academic credentials at a regionally accredited US institution or a foreign institution having the equivalent of regional accreditation.

Instructors with credentials from other countries will have their transcripts evaluated by agencies that have good standing with the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services to establish fulfillment of this standard.
