Position Summary

Under the direction of grounds maintenance management, works independently to perform a wide range of landscape maintenance duties, working safely with gas and diesel powered equipment including mowers, tractors, chainsaws etc., and attending to plants, trees and lawns on assigned campuses. Performs work as designated essential personnel. Incumbents in this job classification work independently to develop landscape maintenance plans and take a lead role in coordinating the work of Groundskeeper I and II for their assigned campus. Job requires mature conversational skills and courtesy to exchange information and assistance of a more complex nature.

Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.

  • Demonstrated proficiency with a wide-variety of landscape maintenance equipment, including tractors, large mowers, snow plows, and power tools.  Proficient at loading equipment onto and off of trailers, and pulling loaded trailers.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills including site landscape maintenance planning.  Strong project management skills with demonstrated success leading projects to completion within time and budget constraints
  • Demonstrated experience with computer-managed and manual irrigation systems operation, maintenance, and repair
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, with demonstrated ability to communicate and advocate with higher echelon constituents
  • Demonstrated experience with Integrated Pest Management and possesses a Public Pesticide Applicators license with endorsements for ornamentals, turf, herbicides, fungicides, and insecticides Or an apprentice license
  • Strong knowledge of storm water management including proper cleaning and maintenance of bio-swales, dry wells, and catch basins
  • Knowledge of HAZCOM and HAZWASTE procedures, MSDSs, confined-space and OSHA rules and regulations
  • Recent experience with basic maintenance/repair of small engines & powered landscape equipment
  • Strong record-keeping and computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel spreadsheets
  • Experience in Use of a Respirator

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

High school diploma or equivalent; one year of formal training or education in landscaping/horticulture (work experience may substitute for formal training or education on a year-for-year basis).

Three years of work experience in all aspects of landscaping including equipment operation such as riding mowers, tractors, and snow removal equipment.

Demonstrated experience directing and coordinating the work of others, basic computer and good record keeping skills.

Must possess or be able to obtain a valid public pesticide apprentice license and forklift certification within nine months of employment. Must be able to obtain certificates for first aid/CPR within six months of employment. Must be able to use a respirator when required.

Must have valid driver license to operate a motor vehicle in the state of Oregon and possess an acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associates Degree in Landscaping, Horticulture, or Arboriculture
  • Five or more years of recent, broad-based experience in all aspects of landscape maintenance with two years leading a crew in landscape maintenance
  • Recent experience working and leading in a campus environment or public institutional setting, including training and mentoring staff

Position Grade 18
Starting Salary Expectations The first two steps of the range are: $52,293 to $53,862 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

Working Conditions and Physical Requirements

Work Environment
Work is performed primarily outdoors, on varying terrain (some potentially hazardous) in all types of extreme weather conditions and involves potential exposure to pesticides and maintenance related substance, blood borne pathogens, and diseased animals. Position involves recurring early and late hours with exposure to hazards, ventilation problems and noise extremes, high vehicular traffic and congested areas.  Travel between college locations using college-owned vehicle or personal vehicle may be required. Physical Requirements
Position requires shoveling of heavy materials and the use of equipment such as mowers, chain saws, pruners, snow and leaf blowers, sprayers, tractors and edgers. Strength and agility, and extended standing and heavy lifting are required.
