Accounting Technician II, Cash Vault

Position Summary

Portland Community College is seeking an Accounting Technician II - Cash Vault, to join the Bursar/Treasury Team. Under the direction of the  department manager, this position performs a variety of cash control, bookkeeping and accounting functions in support of registration processes, treasury and auxiliary services. Responsible for the accurate processing and verification of cash deposits and cash/change orders.  This includes the counting of currency, coin, and checks, customer change orders, entering transactions into the computer, and balancing funds processed each day. Experience in processing high volumes of cash, resolving complex issues, demonstrating attention to detail and using judgment in interpreting and adapting guidelines to specific situations is highly desirable.

At this time, the work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8 hours a day.  Daily work hours are flexible around the core hours of 7am - 5:30pm.  Currently, this position may be eligible for some hybrid work.  If a hybrid schedule is agreed upon for some remote work, the individual must have an appropriate remote workspace, adequate internet access, and may not perform other duties (such as child/elder care, other job) during work hours.  The department will provide a laptop that can be used both remotely and on-site.  The worksite would be located at the Sylvania campus, but may travel to the other 3 campuses to conduct cash counts several times a month.  Hybrid schedule availability may vary or change depending on the needs of the student, department and college.

Candidate Profile

These qualifications, skills and abilities are critical for success in this position.
Throughout the screening process, you will be evaluated based on the demonstration of these qualifications.

  • 2 years of high volume cash handling experience in higher education, banking, or retail establishment including the daily use of cash bill/coin counting machines.
  • Experience managing multi location department cash funds including reconciliation, balancing cash drawers; ensuring each location has acceptable cash and coin levels and buying and selling money from the bank and or main office vault.
  • Experience in multi fund accounting as it pertains to cashiering.
  • Demonstrated ability in reconciliation of daily transactions as it pertains to deposits, transfers and refunds including doing research, troubleshooting to balance the transactions as well as the ability to forecast cash needed by each campus.
  • Proficient in understanding entries as it pertains to student and vendor accounts within Banner/Workday or other ERP systems.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

High school diploma or equivalent; one year of college-level bookkeeping or general accounting (experience performing the duties described above for one year may substitute for the college-level coursework).

Two years experience performing accounting or bookkeeping functions, which must include coding transactions, balancing and resolving discrepancies.

Proficient in various computer applications, including use of spreadsheet and word processing software, and database. Accurate keyboarding and ten-key skills. Ability to communicate complex/technical data effectively – orally and in writing. Provides effective customer service to department customers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 5 years cashiering, cash handling or vault services experience.
  • Higher education experience.
  • Demonstrated reconciliation experience.

Position Grade 17
Starting Salary Expectations The first two steps of the range are: $49,582 to $51,070 per year. Higher salary placement may be available based on qualifications, experience and internal equity.

Work Environment
Work is performed in a normal office environment. Exposure to video display terminals occurs with varied frequency.

Physical Requirements
Learned physical skill for performing keyboarding and ten-key functions.
